Russian pretexts on the boarder with Belarus, in Donbass, against Russian nationals in Ukraine, the return of Russian sympathizer Poroshenko, acts of sabotage, cyber attacks, extensively increased influence operations and narrative management, blanket disinformation focusing on societal divisions, media manipulation, trolls spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt all are components of the Russian hybrid war playbook. This is not new. Managing the narrative and manipulating media ensures the proper perception. Political activity and meddling by false-front organizations in domestic politics is another component. The issuance of Russian passports to residents of disputed areas or even in the Ukraine. Economic coercion (weaponizing natural gas) along with critical infrastructure cyber attacks make the list. Military activity by proxies and third party groups along with exercises near boards combined with maritime and aerial intrusions are important hybrid war activities. Criminal activities and actions likely staged and over-hyped contribute to the cognitive psychological operations of hybrid warfare.
