The heavy upgrade of the Russian Leopard nuclear attack submarine is nearing completion.

Akola 2 Leopard submarine was supposed to be ready to return to service at the end of 2021 after the modernization program (upgrading to the 971M class standard), but now, with a delay of two years, it is finally scheduled to serve in the North Sea fleet at the end of 2023.
In upgrading the Russian Akulas to the 971M (Akula 3) standard, these submarines have the ability to fire cruise caliber through the torpedo tube, and the submarine is equipped with the new MGK-540 M Shark Gill sonar system, which itself is an upgrade on the sonar. It is MGK-540.
(NATO has named all MGK-400, MGK-500, MGK-540, and MGK-540M sonar families as Shark Gill or the same shark gill)
With the completion of this upgrade, the SSN Leopard submarine, along with the Gepard, are both among the most modern submarines of the Russian Akola fleet.
