The RAND Corporation conducted a game theory study of the North Korean nuclear issue.  Their recommendations to the American leadership:

The United States must take action to force Kim Jong-un to reveal his motives: whether he wants only to maintain his regime, or also to conquer South Korea.

Reliable mechanisms must be put in place to ensure compliance with any potential agreement.

US should be wary of Kim’s attempts to weaken US influence in the region.

The United States must secure Chinese support for any initiatives regarding the DPRK.

The United States should set a deadline for full denuclearization and indicate the consequences if this deadline is not met.

US should push Kim and American negotiators to value human life more than national ambition

 Politicians and people in power should do their best to minimize impulsiveness and rash actions in future negotiations.
