Ali #Khameni
The morning in Tehran was cold, and it was the twenty-eighth day of February in the year 2026. The city was very quiet. It was quiet because the internet had been down for a long time, and people were afraid. The streets were full of Basij and Revolutionary Guard, and they were tired and did not want to fight anymore. In a compound in the heart of the city, an older man met with his advisors. He was eighty-six years old. He had ruled for thirty-seven years. He was the Supreme Leader, but the machines in the sky and the men in the dark rooms in Tel Aviv and Washington knew everything about him. They knew when he woke. They knew what he ate. They knew the names of the men who walked beside him.1 They called this his pattern of life.
Tracking a man like Ali Khamenei is not easy. It is a long business. It is a business of patience and machines and the betrayal of friends. The intelligence services used three things to watch him. They used the boots on the ground. They used the eyes in the sky. They used the ghosts in the wires. They watched the way the shadow moved across the courtyard of the Bayt.2 They watched the way the trucks arrived at the missile cities. They watched the signals pulse from the bunkers in the mountains. This report is about how they watched him and how they knew it was time to strike.
The Human Machine- The Shadow Legion on the Ground
The tracking of the Leader began with men. These were the “boots on the ground.” In the intelligence world, this is called HUMINT.3 It is the oldest way to fight a war, and it is the hardest. The Mossad and the CIA did not just use their own people. They used a “foreign legion” of Iranians who hated the regime. These men and women were the ones who walked the streets of Tehran when it was dangerous to walk.
The Recruitment of the Disillusioned
The Mossad has a division called Tsomet. Its job is to find the people who will talk. In the years before 2026, they found many. They looked for the student whom the Basij had tortured. They looked for the man whose family had no money because the Rial was worth nothing. One agent was a student named “S.T.” He came from a working-class family near Tehran. The Basij had beaten him with electric shocks. He did not forget the shocks. When the Mossad reached out through an encrypted app, he agreed to work. He only asked that they take care of his family.
These agents were recruited in third countries. They were given free trips to places where the regime could not see them. They were not all students. Some were customs officers. Some were truck drivers. Some were high-ranking officials in the security services. There was even a double agent who ran the unit designed to catch Israeli spies. When the man at the top of the counter-intelligence office is your agent, the war is already half-won.

The Training at the Midrasho
The training was a hard business. It took place at the Midrasho, the training academy near Herzliya. The recruits were tested for three years. They were given psychological tests to see if they could kill every day and still sleep. They were taught the “Art of the Shadow,” meaning learning how to avoid surveillance by cars, on foot, and by camera.
The agents practiced on “replicas.” If the target was a warehouse in Tehran, the Mossad built a warehouse in the desert identical to it. They used the same safes. They used the same locks. The agents practiced breaking into the safes in under seven hours because they knew the guards would return in the morning. They learned to use torches that could burn through iron. They learned to use jamming devices to kill the alarms.
Legends and Infiltration
To live in Tehran as a spy, you must have a “legend.” A legend is a lie that is better than the truth.
- The Businessmen- Seventy percent of the agents used the pretense of being business owners. They ran companies that brought electronics or equipment into Iran. These companies were fronts for the Mossad.
- The Holy Men- Some agents posed as Imams in mosques. They used religion to hide the work of the spear.
- The Commoners- Female agents often walked the streets with a “male guardian.” They dressed in Islamic clothing and looked like any other couple. While they walked, they were mapping the security cameras and the patrol schedules.
- The Insiders- Some agents never left their jobs. They stayed in the Ministry of Energy or the Revolutionary Guard. They whispered about the locks and the rhythms of the night.
Safe Houses and the Silent Workshops
The agents lived in safe houses. These were three-story buildings right under the regime’s nose. Inside these houses, the agents built weapons. They built drones with wings smuggled in through 24 separate containers. They kept 200 kilos of explosives in the basements. They had GPS boxes and launch systems. They assembled the weapons and waited for the coordinates. They did not know what the target was until the order came through at 3 a.m.
Lethality and the “Tip of the Spear”
The most dangerous men belonged to a unit called Kidon. Kidon means “bayonet” in Hebrew. They are the assassins. There are fewer than 75 of them. Their motto is “Silent, Swift, Deadly.” They do not use patches or names. They use magnetized explosives. They use drones that fly into windows. They are the ones who tracked the nuclear scientists to their bedrooms. They are the “long arm” that makes every official in the Islamic Republic fear for his life.

The Eyes in the Sky and the Glass Battlefield
The world had become a glass battlefield. There were no secrets in the open air.5 High-resolution satellites from Maxar and Planet Labs were always watching. They had over two hundred machines in orbit.6 They could see the ground with fifty-centimeter clarity. They could see it many times a day. Because intelligence became widely accessible, the general public was also aware of the ships’ locations and the hiding spots of the missiles.5
The coalition used these satellites to track the physical world of the Supreme Leader. They watched the Parchin military complex.7 The Iranians were trying to hide a new building called Taleghan 2. They built a concrete sarcophagus around it.9 They covered it with soil so it would look like the earth.7 But the satellites saw the construction. They saw cylindrical containment vessels moved at night and observed soil being gathered into mounds. They knew it was a nuclear bunker.
Tracking Khamenei’s movements involved monitoring the motorcade. The satellites tracked the number of vehicles. They tracked the route from the palace to the mosque. They combined this with the buildings’ heat signatures. A meeting of twenty men makes a different heat signature than an empty room. This is how they knew the meeting had begun.11
The Ghosts in the Wires and the Digital Blackout
The third pillar was the signal intelligence, better known as the art of listening to things that are not spoken aloud. In January of 2026, the regime tried to shut down the internet. They called it a “Selective Whitelist”.13 They wanted to cut off the protesters while keeping the banks and the military connected. They thought this would keep them safe. However, they were wrong.
The blackout’s silence made the state’s signals much louder. It was like a signal-to-noise inversion.13 When all the civilian traffic is gone, the only thing left is the state. The intelligence services mapped the “whitelisted pipes.” They found the Pardis Bunker.13 This was a massive data center northeast of Tehran. The concealment took place beneath the Fanap company. It was the central nervous system for the blackout and the surveillance of the people.
The SIGINT operators used a tool called “Predatory Sparrow.” It was a cyberweapon that could communicate with the machines that ran the country.14 On the day of the strike, it told the IRGC communications to stop.15 The leadership was in a digital fog. They could not call for help. They could not tell the missile crews to fire. The internet in Iran dropped to 4% of its normal level. 15
The Mission – Operationalizing Sovereign Intelligence
The metadata was the most important thing. Even if a message is encrypted, metadata reveals who is talking and where they are.16 The analysts watched the metadata of the phones in the compound. They saw the connections between the guards and the advisors. They observed the Bayt’s operational cadence.2 When the cadence changed on Saturday morning, it was the final confirmation. The ghost in the wires told them that the target was in the room.12
The Pattern of Life and the Synthesis of Intelligence
A pattern of life is a map of a man’s habits. Ali Khamenei was an older man with many habits. The CIA and the Mossad studied these habits for years.1 They knew what time he prayed. They knew which doctors he saw. They knew how he traveled when he was afraid. This analysis combined all the disciplines.
The HUMINT told them the intent. It told them that the regime was suffering from “Succession Paralysis”.17 It told them that the factions were fighting. The GEOINT told them the physical reality. It showed the concrete sarcophagus and the backfilled tunnels.9 The SIGINT told them the real-time movement. It showed the metadata spikes and the whitelisted pipes.13
When you put these three things together, the man becomes transparent. You can see through the compound’s walls. You can see the fear in the room. The “Kinetic-to-Cognitive Correlation” meant that the physical threat of the strike was timed to coincide with the collapse of the guards’ internal loyalty.17 The planners did not just want to kill a man. They wanted to kill a system.
The Kinetic Rupture- Operation Roaring Lion
The strike began at eight-fifteen in the morning on Saturday, February 28.11 It was called Operation Roaring Lion. It was a joint operation between the Americans and the Israelis. It was a departure from everything that had come before. It was not a night raid. It was a daylight execution.
The fifth-generation stealth aircraft led the way. The B-21 Raider and the F-35I Adir were in the sky.14 They used digital masking systems to stay invisible to the Iranian radar. The Bavar-373 and the S-400 could not see them.14 The planes carried the AGM-158 JASSM-ER and the GBU-57 Bunker Busters.14 They were looking for the leadership gathering.
The strike was precise. The compound was destroyed; however, the surrounding houses remained intact. The Americans targeted and struck military installations as well as missile sites. The Israelis hit the leadership. It was a “surgical decapitation. “11 Within minutes, the command and control of the Iranian state was gone. The IRGC commanders in the provinces did not know what to do. Some of them looked for immunity.18 Others tried to fire their missiles, but the cyberattacks had paralyzed the launch systems.15
The lesson of 2026 is that a leader’s habits are his greatest danger. If you know when he wakes, who he talks to, and where he meets, you can kill him. You can kill the system he built. The machines in the sky are still watching. They are watching the next man. They are waiting for his pattern to begin.
The Supreme Leader was dead. The Rial was at 1,000,000 per dollar, and oil was not moving through the Strait of Hormuz.17 The world was watching the smoke rise from the compound in Tehran, and they knew that things would never be the same. The Supreme Leader was gone, and the pattern of life was over. The machines saw it all.
