Where do Russian airlines get spare parts for their aircraft after the imposition of sanctions? The “project” studied data from ImportGenius, a commercial customs data aggregator.
🔹 Imports of aircraft parts and components from European and American manufacturers have dropped dramatically: in the first six months of the war (from March to August 2022), the leading airlines purchased them for about $44 million . For comparison: for the same period in 2021 , only Aeroflot purchased parts worth at least $430 million .
🔹 The geography of imports has also changed dramatically. French, German and American suppliers were replaced by companies from China, the United Arab Emirates, as well as Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, which practically did not appear among the partners of Russian airlines before the war. For example, in June last year, Casper Aviation, a company registered in the UAE, supplied the S7 airline with an electronic control unit for steering surfaces for an Airbus 319/320/31 manufactured by the French Thales Avionics for $42,000 .
🔹 It is important that not all spare parts imported into Russia were new. Often they are removed from foreign donor aircraft. This was allowed in peacetime, but this practice was not common before the sanctions, because there were enough opportunities to order them from the manufacturer. Now Russia has officially allowed the use of spare parts repaired in China, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, India, Uzbekistan, Egypt, South Africa and other countries.
