Treadstone 71 reviewed un-corroborated Iranian chatter that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei deliberately leaked information to Israel’s intelligence service, Mossad, to facilitate the elimination of a rebellious Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) leadership group.
The chatter reflected on internal power struggles within Iran, where a faction within the IRGC expressed a desire for leadership change in the religious hierarchy.
Khamenei apparently used proxy channels to indirectly leak the information, as the chatter states. IRGC leadership is investigating.
Such an action by Khamanei would suggest a severe level of desperation or strategic calculation by Khamenei to maintain control over Iran’s power structures, indicating potential fractures within the Iranian regime while casting a shadow of weakness on the IRGC driving more infighting.
