Observations on the results of the census in the three Christian Volga republics – Udmurtia, Mari El, and Chuvashia.
Usually, the situation in them is described as total Russification, but this is a simplification. Three different processes are taking place in the three republics.
🇯🇵 Udmurtia: Mass Russification. Only a few districts with a significant Udmurt majority remained. There are many areas where 20 years ago the Udmurts seriously prevailed over the Russians, and now they are approximately equal (which means that by 2030, the Russians will break ahead by a margin). An unequivocal trend towards the almost complete dissolution of the Udmurt people into Russians in the next few decades.

🇦🇷 Mari El: polarization between the west and east of the republic. The west from the border with the Nizhny Novgorod region to Yoshkar-Ola, historically mixed Russian-Mari, is noticeably Russified. The East, where there are more Mari and paganism, is preserved, is not Russified, the Mari hold firmly. Gornomariysky district is also unchanged.
🇪🇸 Chuvashia: Not Russified. The share of Russians is growing in the cities, and also a little in a couple of areas with a noticeable Russian presence, but the main body of the republic remains firmly Chuvash without noticeable changes.
