In the area of the Imatra-Svetogorsk border crossing on the Finnish-Russian border, the construction of a fence from the Finnish side has begun. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, according to the Finnish edition of Yle.

According to the publication, the work began with the uprooting of trees in the Imatra region. In the near future, it is planned to build a three-kilometer test site. In March, laying of the road and the erection of a fence, as well as the creation of a technical control system, will begin.
The 3m high barbed wire fence is expected to be equipped with a night mode video surveillance, spotlights and speakers in some of the most important areas. A road for border patrols and maintenance work will be built next to the fence.
About 200 km of barriers will be erected along the eastern border. This is about 15% of the entire length of the Finnish-Russian border, which is almost 1.3 thousand km. The Finnish authorities estimate that the construction of the entire fence will take three to four years. It will cost hundreds of millions of euros.
In November 2022, the Finnish Border Guard reported that a 130–260 km long fence needed to be built on the eastern border to prevent massive illegal immigration. The Finnish authorities discussed the construction of a fence on the border after the start of a special operation in Ukraine. The government proposed to allocate €139 million for its construction.
