The release of foreign films in the PRC is overseen by the China Cinematography Administration (also known as the General Administration of Press and Publication), a division of the propaganda department of the Communist Party. CFA blocks releases of foreign films that do not pass censorship, as well as in order to develop domestic cinema.
The agency is responsible for regulating:
1️⃣ New publishing houses – book, audiovisual, electronic editions, editorial offices of newspapers and periodicals
2️⃣ General distribution services – for publications (including books, newspapers, periodicals, audio and video products and electronic publications
3️⃣ Copyright agencies – audiovisual and electronic copying agencies and newspaper groups
4️⃣ Agents – work with imported publications
5️⃣ Foreign joint ventures in the news, print and communications industries.
The General Administration of Press and Publication is under the direct control of the Central Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China. Which is right, because it’s a strategy.
The agency consists of the following departments:
