In an effort to restrict free speech in Russia, the Kremlin has block access to information critical of the war against Ukraine. Anything related to the invasion is filter within Russia, or at least that is the desire from the Kremlin. Putin and company try to blame Facebook/Meta for the blocking, yet Russian disinformation posts are running afoul of #meta algorithms.

Russian directives:

Partial restrictions on access to the social network Facebook have been introduced in Russia . According to Roskomnadzor, the restrictions have been in effect since February 25, 2022. The reason for taking such measures in the department was called the decision of the Prosecutor General’s Office, which, in agreement with the Foreign Ministry, recognized Facebook as a violator of fundamental human rights and freedoms, as well as the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens.

Roskomnadzor explained that the restrictions were introduced due to the blocking by the American social network of the official accounts of four Russian media outlets: the Zvezda TV channel, the RIA Novosti news agency, as well as the Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru websites. On February 24, Roskomnadzor sent requests to the administration of Meta Platforms , Inc. remove restrictions on Russian media and explain the reason for their introduction, but the demand was ignored.

We are not yet talking about the complete closure of this social network in Russia. Recall that Facebook is part of the Meta Platforms, which also includes the popular social network Instagram and the WhatsApp messenger. According to the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein, the measures against Facebook will be similar to those previously applied to Twitter – traffic will be limited.

Users in Russia are already reporting a longer loading of Facebook pages, but the social network continues to work.
