In 2000, a state contract was signed between the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering for the implementation of the Yars R & D – the implementation of the Topol-MR project – the development of the Topol-M rocket with updated engines and a multiple warhead. “Topol-M” with MIRV was supposed to become completely Russian – because. actually “Topol-M” was only partially Russian – the project was originally a joint brainchild of Dnepropetrovsk and MIT. Even the first flight model of the 1L missile, which launched second in 1995, was produced in Ukraine.
So, “Topol-MR” was supposed to absorb everything that could not be implemented in “Topol-M” – new nozzles, new fuels, a new combat stage, new combat equipment. But the Yars project initially assumed not just an advanced version of the Topol-M, which had already been put into service. The Yars project assumed the development of this concept:
– new ballistic warheads
– guided warheads
– new-old concept of a split warhead
– new base options
I think that MIT, having remained a monopoly, should have included in this contract all the main directions of the project’s development in a businesslike manner. And as a result, an impressive program for creating a series of missile systems could well have developed.
The first stage – Yars (Zh55M, Zh65): complexes with silo-based and mobile-based ICBMs with a completely Russian design were created. The main technical innovation is a multiple reentry vehicle with light individually targetable warheads with some unification with the Bulava SLBM.
The second stage – Yars-S: a variant of the complex with warheads of the middle power class, and also (probably) with a modernized control system – higher accuracy, better controllability by means of combat control of the Strategic Missile Forces.
It should be clarified that despite the fact that in some sources the 15Ts62 complex is attributed as an “active defense complex”, 15Ts62 is not a classic KAZ with a kinetic defeat of attacking ammunition, but refers to the means of creating interference.
