Russian Ministry of Defense says an US Navy Virginia-class submarine was detected near Russian territorial waters near the contested Kuril islands.
According to Russian MoD, Russian Pacific Fleet Udaloy-class destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov used special means and submarine retreated from the area.
On February 12, the Marshal Shaposhnikov missile frigate of the Pacific Fleet discovered the Virginia-class nuclear-powered multi-purpose submarine in Russian territorial waters near Urup Island in the Kuril chain. The American crew did not comply with the Russian command to “surface immediately”, and “Marshal Shaposhnikov” used “special means” on the violator of the state border. After that, the Virginia left the territorial waters of the Russian Federation at maximum speed (34 knots).
Special means of “Marshal Shaposhnikov” could be, for example, a volley of a jet bomb installation – adjusted for the depth of the submarine’s immersion, so that the Americans would shake, but the strong hull with a nuclear reactor would remain intact (Russia does not need an infection zone in its waters). Whether the US Navy submarine will then reach the nearest base in Yokosuka under its own power is not an idle question.
The Russian Defense Ministry handed a note to the US military attache in Moscow. And it was no coincidence that American President Joe Biden called Russian President Vladimir Putin today. “Virginia” created a real threat to the national security of the Russian Federation, and could be destroyed (we remember the “Kursk”).
The low-noise 115-meter Virginia-class submarines of the US Navy are considered one of the most secretive. Main armament: 12 vertical installations for launching Tomahawk missiles and four 533-mm torpedo tubes (ammunition – 26 Harpoon missiles, Mk.48 torpedoes or Mk.60 mines). To perform special operations, the submarine is equipped with a camera for placing an ultra-small underwater manned vehicle (the number of reconnaissance and sabotage groups is 9 people) or a remote-controlled drone. The crew of the “Virginia” – 135 people. Underwater displacement – 7925 tons. The maximum diving depth is 450 meters. The maximum autonomy time (without surfacing) is 3 months.
The Russian 163-meter frigate “Marshal Shaposhnikov” of project 1155 (total displacement of 8500 tons) after a deep modernization received the latest weapons systems – high-precision cruise missiles “Caliber” (range more than 1500 km) and “Uranus” (up to 260 km), a new radar station MP-760 and information processing system 5P-30N2. The multi-purpose American submarine today quite naturally “got into history.”
