French police arrested a 26-year-old man in Alsace (eastern France). The man was unknown to the intelligence services.
At the suspect’s home, police found four homemade bombs using uranium powder. Three of the bombs were fully functional, making this the first case of terrorism in Western Europe involving a nuclear bomb. He had purchased the components to make his bombs via the internet. The young student appeared to be planning to detonate the devices in front of public buildings.
The police found badges of the Division Charlemagne (composed of French volunteers who joined the Waffen-SS against the USSR).
