Orcelle Wind project, the world’s first car carrier to be powered by wind power

Wallenius Wilhelmsen reportedly made an online presentation of the Orcelle Wind project, the world’s first car carrier to be powered by wind power.  By mid-2022, the company expects to complete the design in order to place an order at the shipyard and bring the ship into service by 2025.  The capacity of a car carrier (Pure Car and Truck Carrier) will be 7 thousand units, in addition to passenger cars, the vessel will be equipped for the transportation of heavy equipment and oversized cargo.

The maximum permissible load on the ramp is expected to be about 150-200 tons, the height of the main deck – 5 m. The length of the vessel will be about 220 m, width – about 40 m, sailing speed – 10-12 knots, with the possibility of increasing it with the help of additional power plants.  The maximum height of the sails to be installed on the vessel will be over 100 m, if necessary, the sails can be folded down to a height of 50 m or less.
