Russian bought and paid for
The Elon Musk backed pro-Russian candidate in Romania, Calin Georgescu has been arrested. Authorities raided him like the crook he is and found at least $10 million in cash and tickets to Moscow.
Romanian authorities have detained Călin Georgescu, a far-right politician known for his pro-Russian stance, for questioning regarding alleged violations of anti-extremist laws.
The development follows the annulment of last year’s presidential election, in which Georgescu unexpectedly led the first round.
The annulment was based on allegations of Russian interference favoring his candidacy, though definitive evidence has yet to be presented. Georgescu, who plans to run again in the upcoming May election rerun, was apprehended while en route to submit his candidacy papers.
His official Facebook page claims that authorities are fabricating evidence to block his candidacy and undermine democracy in Romania.
In addition to his detention, law enforcement conducted multiple searches of properties associated with Georgescu and his close associates.
The searches are part of an investigation into the financing of his previous campaign and potential connections to extremist activities. Reports indicate that significant sums of money were discovered during these operations, including €900,000 found hidden in his bodyguard’s residence.
The situation has attracted international attention, notably from U.S. Vice President JD Vance and billionaire Elon Musk. Both have criticized Romania’s decision to annul the December election. Vance suggested that the annulment indicates a divergence from shared democratic values, while Musk labeled Romania’s chief judge a “tyrant” on social media. These remarks have sparked debates about foreign influence and the integrity of Romania’s democratic processes.
Georgescu’s political trajectory has been marked by controversy, including allegations of attempting to establish a fascist organization and promoting extremist ideologies. Despite these controversies, he maintains a significant following, with recent polls positioning him as a leading candidate in the forthcoming election. The unfolding events continue to generate discussions about the resilience of democratic institutions in Romania and the broader implications of foreign interference in national elections.
