Telegram after the arrest and release of its founder Pavel Durov – his story in South Korea
Recently, Telegram has been criticized for its handling of deepfake pornographic content in South Korea. According to a report by South Korea’s media regulatory body, Telegram agreed to the request to remove some deepfake pornographic content from its platform and apologized for the way it responded to digital sexual crimes.
A representative of Telegram’s East Asia branch confirmed in an email to the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) that the company has removed 25 cases of sexually exploitative content from its platform as requested by the KCSC. Telegram also apologized for the miscommunication regarding the issue and shared a dedicated email address for future communications with the media watchdog.
The KCSC announced that it has asked Telegram to establish a direct line of communication with South Korean authorities so that it can more effectively respond to illegal content on the platform. A KCSC official said that by providing this direct line of communication, they hope to strengthen cooperation with Telegram to solve the problem of the circulation of deepfake sexual exploitation material and ultimately eradicate digital sex crime content.
