Well-known scientists leave Russia en masse and leave universities
After the outbreak of the war, not only independent journalists and young people fleeing the mobilization began to leave Russia, but also world-famous scientists. The “project” studied what is happening in Russian science now, and found out who was forced to leave the country.
🔹We have identified the names of 28 scientists who left Russia after the start of the war. Among them are Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the Moscow Mathematical Society Viktor Vasiliev, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yuri Kovalev (astrophysicist), professors of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Popov (also an astrophysicist) and Alexander Markov (biologist).
The total number of scientists who left is much higher. Only the organization Scholars at Risk took out 200 people from Russia, another 62 scientists were helped to leave by the German fund of Alexander von Humboldt. And there are now more than six thousand people in Telegram chats for scientists who need relocation.
Many universities have lost dozens of teachers. In one of the departments of the National Research University Higher School of Economics – the Institute for Humanitarian Historical and Theoretical Research – 60% of the employees quit, ex-director of IGITI Alexey Pleshkov told the Project. According to former HSE professor Konstantin Sonin, the university lost at least 150 teachers in total. The leadership of the HSE contributed to this – immediately after the start of the war, they called the employees and found out where they were. Those who were abroad were immediately asked to resign or transferred to temporary contracts.
