Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States has told members of Congress that Russia used a “thermobaric” weapon during Monday’s fighting in Ukraine.
“They used a vacuum bomb today, which is banned under the Geneva Conventions,” Oksana Markarova told reporters after the meeting.
The BBC has not confirmed this claim.
Thermobaric or thermosetting weapons do not use conventional ammunition, but are high in high-explosive explosives and, by absorbing oxygen from the environment, lead to a very powerful explosion and the propagation of pressure waves.
The weapon has already been used in the Chechen Republic of Russia, according to Human Rights Watch.
Cyanan reported on Saturday that it had seen a high-pressure rocket launcher near the Russian city of Belgorod.
