Amaq Agency – Syria – Hasakah: Dozens of PKK militiamen were killed and hundreds of prisoners broke out of Ghwaryan prison, following the sweeping offensive that Islamic State fighters launched 3 days ago on the large prison in Hasakah.
A military source in the Islamic State told Amaq Agency that 2 days ago, on Thursday night, Islamic State fighters launched the sweeping and coordinated attack on the Ghwaryan prison, which is run by the American-backed PKK militia, and where thousands of prisoners have been held since the end of the famous Battle of al-Baghouz.
The source added that the offensive began with the launch of two istishhadis, Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Muhajir and Abu al-Faruq al-Muhajir, with two truck bombs, which they blew up at the prison gate and walls, devastating the place and killing and wounding many militiamen.
The source pointed out that immediately after the explosions of the trucks, commando detachments deployed across four flanks. The first flank attacked the prison towers and the government-owned fuel depot adjacent to it, where they burned the oil tanks inside to create a smoke screen to block the view of international coalition aircraft. The second flank attacked the headquarters of a nearby militia unit to cut off its deployment of support forces to the prison. And the third and fourth flanks cut off the two remaining routes to the prison and clashed with the patrols that tried to reach the scene.
The source indicated that fierce clashes erupted at the prison walls and the area around them with heavy and light weapons, at the same time as activity inside the prison, which led to control taken over the weapons storage facility, and the death and arrest of many prison guard and militiamen. The fighters then infiltrated the prison after demolishing it and burning parts of it.
The source confirmed that as of the writing of this report, the battles inside the prison and the surrounding area resulted in Islamic State fighters killing over 200 militiamen, including the “prison warden” and a number of their field commanders. Furthermore, the source explained that the video that Amaq obtained of the dead bodies of PKK militiamen is from the first day of the battles, and added that the fighters burned about 25 vehicles of different types, and seized 4 4x4s equipped with heavy machine guns.
The same source revealed to Amaq that the battles have continued into the third day between the PKK militia and American forces with the Islamic State fighters, who are currently separated into three divisions: one division inside the prison, the second spread out in the surrounding area, and the third spread out in the nearby neighborhoods. These three divisions are engaged in continuous fighting.
Regarding the number of prisoners whose chains were broken during the offensive, the source said that the fighters were able to free over 800 of them, who came out in segments over the past 2 days, and they pledged to die and instilled themselves with determination to continue fighting until they leave as free men or are killed as they are, as slaves of Allah.
