The Codebreakers hacking group claims to have breached Bank Sepah’s systems and obtained financial, identity and residential information for 42 million customers. The group said the data included the name of Hassan Polark, the former head of the Holy Shrines Reconstruction Team, with an account balance of 634 billion tomans (about $160 million).
Bank Sepah has denied the claims, and the bank’s head of public relations has stressed that Bank Sepah’s systems are unhackable, its networks are completely closed and independent of the internet, and that no intrusion has been made to date.
These claims and denials come at a time when their accuracy has not yet been independently verified. If the hackers’ claims are true, the intrusion could have serious consequences for the security of the financial and personal information of millions of Bank Sepah’s customers.
