Tesla has committed to paying China approximately $323 million annually in taxes as part of its agreement to establish the Gigafactory in Shanghai. This arrangement includes a requirement for Tesla to invest around $2 billion in capital expenditures over five years. The tax payments were scheduled to begin at the end of 2023, aligning with the factory’s production ramp-up.

In contrast, Tesla has reported minimal to zero federal income tax obligations in the United States in certain years. For instance, in 2018, despite significant income, Tesla paid no federal income taxes. Similarly, in 2024, the company reported $2.3 billion in income but again paid zero federal income tax.
