The 1st Destroyer Brigade of the Northern Fleet of the PLA Navy has commissioned the lead frigate “Luohe” (b.n. 545) Type 054B
The commissioning ceremony took place on January 22 at the Qingdao Naval Base. The ship is scheduled to be launched in August 2025.

The Type 054B frigate “Luohe” (b.n. 545) represents the latest in China’s advancements in naval engineering, serving as the lead ship for its class under the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s 1st Destroyer Brigade of the Northern Fleet. The commissioning ceremony, which occurred at the Qingdao Naval Base on January 22, shows China’s continued emphasis on modernizing its naval forces to achieve regional and global maritime dominance. The frigate, which was initially launched in August 2023, incorporates new technologies designed to enhance its survivability, operational reach, and combat effectiveness.
The Type 054B introduces significant upgrades over its predecessor, the Type 054A, which was well-regarded for its versatility and capability as a multi-role frigate. The Type 054B features an enhanced displacement of approximately 6,000 tons, allowing for greater stability and endurance in diverse maritime conditions. Its hull design emphasizes stealth through reduced radar cross-section and advanced coatings to minimize detection by adversaries.
Its armament systems are designed to support a wide range of operations, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. The primary weapons system likely includes vertical launch systems (VLS) capable of firing surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and potentially land-attack cruise missiles. The ship is equipped with an advanced main gun and secondary weapons, optimized for short- and medium-range engagements. Anti-submarine warfare capabilities are bolstered by sonar systems, torpedoes, and the capability to deploy anti-submarine rockets.
The frigate’s electronic warfare and radar systems reflect a significant leap forward. The integrated mast design houses state-of-the-art phased array radar systems for air and surface surveillance, targeting, and fire control. Electronic warfare systems provide jamming and decoy capabilities to protect against incoming threats. The command and control system enables real-time data sharing with other naval assets, supporting coordinated fleet operations and enhancing situational awareness.
The Type 054B also emphasizes modularity and flexibility, enabling it to adapt to various mission profiles, including escort duties, maritime patrols, and power projection. It is equipped with a hangar and flight deck capable of accommodating helicopters or UAVs, expanding its reach for reconnaissance, search and rescue, and anti-submarine missions. Improvements in propulsion systems, which may include integrated electric propulsion, enhance fuel efficiency and operational range, allowing the vessel to sustain long-duration missions.
The introduction of the “Luohe” frigate of the PLA Navy’s shows commitment to closing the technological gap with other global navies and demonstrates China’s resolve to secure its maritime interests. As part of the 1st Destroyer Brigade of the Northern Fleet, this vessel will play a pivotal role in the strategic operations of the PLAN, ensuring a robust presence in contested waters and potentially beyond, in regions critical to China’s geopolitical ambitions.
