China’s cyber regulator has launched a three-month special campaign to improve regulation of online news services and crack down on illegal behavior in the area.
The Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission issued a circular regarding the campaign, noting that the measure is aimed at ensuring a clean online environment.
The campaign will primarily focus on combating violations such as the spread of disinformation, falsification of news information, or the use of clickbait or other distorting or misleading techniques.
In addition, abuse of power in presenting news or search results as a means of blackmail will be prevented.
Other violations that will be addressed include fake news organizations and the illegal transfer of relevant business certificates.
