China has invested more than $6.12 billion in a nationwide data center project in recent years, according to Liu Lihong, head of the National Data Administration of China.
He revealed the figure, which is current as of late June, at an industry conference in the city of Guiyang.
Beijing formally launched the “Eastern Data, Western Computing” initiative in early 2022 as part of President Xi Jinping’s push to build a “digital China.”
China’s massive investment in computing comes amid growing restrictions from the United States, which have limited the export of some advanced computing products, including those from industry leader Nvidia.
The total investment in the eight data centers has exceeded 200 billion yuan, Liu said.
He added that the project has installed more than 1.95 million server racks, about 63% of which are currently in use.
