One of the key figures in this campaign is a former Florida police officer who moved to Moscow, John Mark Dugan, according to a BBC investigation.
Dugan increasingly shifts the focus from fake stories about the war in Ukraine to topics about American and British politics.
According to the BBC, a large amount of digital evidence also points to links between Dugan and Russian fake websites – experts consulted by investigators tracked IP addresses and other digital information on websites run by Dugan.
