Pardon decrees that concern former prisoners who became servicemen of the Wagner PMC are classified as classified, said press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov, an RBC correspondent reports. According to him, he cannot comment on these decrees.
On January 5, the founder of the Wagner PMC, businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin , announced that the first group of participants in the military operation from among former prisoners completed six months of contract service and received a pardon. He clarified that we are talking about two dozen people.
“You know that there are open decrees and there are decrees with various classifications of secrecy. It is precisely because of this decree that I cannot say anything. But I can confirm that the entire procedure for pardoning prisoners is carried out in strict accordance with Russian legislation,” Peskov said.
He also commented on Vladimir Putin awarding the medal “For Courage” to the commander of the assault group of the Wagner PMC, Hayk Gasparyan, a former prisoner of the Ryazan colony. “He is taking part in a special military operation, and he showed heroism during a special military operation, which was recognized with a state award,” Peskov said.
The United States’ classification of the Wagner PMC as a transnational criminal organization, according to the presidential representative, is unfounded; there were no clear arguments in this regard.
“Including what they say about the CAR (Central African Republic – RBC ) – also sounds quite unfounded. There is no evidence, no confirmation – nothing is provided to the public. This significantly devalues the meaning of those statements coming from Washington,” Peskov emphasized.
Previously, the US Treasury classified the Wagner PMC as a transnational criminal organization. The department said that, in addition to participating in the military operation in Ukraine, the PMC “destabilized African countries” and “creates a transcontinental threat.”
