China’s Ministry of State Security warned military enthusiasts not to photograph secret military equipment or publish it on the Internet to avoid threats to national security
The ministry said the images could give foreign intelligence insight into the technical advances and details of military equipment when analyzing their combat effectiveness, and also jeopardize the planning of the country’s military-industrial complex.
▪️ Persons who illegally receive or possess documents, data, materials and items containing state secrets, but are not subject to a criminal offense, may face up to 10 days of arrest .
▪️ Persons who gained access to state secrets through theft, espionage or bribery face up to seven years in prison .
An example is given of a case in which a military enthusiast was sentenced to one year in prison in 2021. He was accused of secretly photographing the USS Fujian with a high-definition camera long before its official launch in June 2022. That same year, a man was sentenced to 14 months in prison for illegally obtaining state secrets after taking photographs containing military secrets near a dual-use airport in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province.
