The political scientist who called for a nuclear strike on Europe turned out to be the owner of an apartment in Venice
One of the co-founders of the Valdai discussion club, former dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, political scientist Sergei Karaganov , who called on Russia to launch a preventive nuclear strike on Europe, owns a two-story apartment in Venice , “Project” found out.
Details . Karaganov, together with his wife Ekaterina Karaganova-Miloslavskaya, owns a two-story apartment with an area of 84 sq. m in the tourist district of Venice Castello.
▪️True, Karaganov cannot use it now – a few days after the publication of that same article calling for a strike, he came under EU sanctions.
▪️But this does not prevent the Karaganov family from receiving income from the Venetian apartment – next to the sign with Karaganov’s name, the doorbells have a registration number, which means that it is rented out to tourists.
▪️The views from the balcony of the Karaganovs’ apartment can be seen in the ad on Booking.com .
Context . Karaganov is one of the founders of the non-governmental organization Council on Foreign and Defense Policy (SVOP), closely associated with the Russian government. On its website, SVOP directly writes that it “carries out its activities in close cooperation” with the presidential administration and security forces. SWOP is one of the founders of the Valdai Club, an event where Putin meets with foreign experts. Until 2021, Karaganov headed the Faculty of World Politics and Economics at the Higher School of Economics.
▪️In June 2023, the magazine “Profile” published an article by a political scientist in which he proposed launching a preemptive nuclear strike on Europe. “This is a morally terrible choice – we use the weapon of God, dooming ourselves to grave spiritual losses. But if this is not done, not only Russia may perish, but, most likely, the entire human civilization will end,” Karaganov wrote.
▪️In October 2023, at a meeting of the Valdai Club, Vladimir Putin rejected the political scientist’s proposal to change the doctrine of the use of nuclear weapons. But the president used the issue as an excuse to propose withdrawing ratification of the nuclear weapons test ban treaty.
▪️Karaganov used to hold different views. For example, in 2010 he wrote in Rossiyskaya Gazeta: “I am a Russian European and I believe in great European values – rationality and reason. In the world of the future, Russia and Europe, acting separately, are doomed to degradation and weakening.”
