Who will be called up for military service now? How to increase the length of stay in stock? What is important to know if I am threatened with conscription or mobilization? Human rights activistsfigured out these questions – we share the answers to them with you
This week, the State Duma passed a law that raises the upper limit of the draft age from 27 to 30 years. Yesterday, the Federation Council also approved the new legislation. The amendments will be sent for Putin’s signature, and from January 1, 2024, they will come into force.
Previously, the authorities raised the age limit for the reserve and passed a law on digital registries and restrictions on “opt-outs”.
Specialized human rights activists have already studied changes in legislation. So, “We Can Explain” contacted a military lawyer and found out exactly how the draft rules would change and who the new amendments would affect. We share the most important information with you:
- Those who turn 27 after January 1, 2024 will be considered conscripts until they reach the age of 30 . This means that starting from next year, people will be drafted into the army from 18 to 30 years old.
- The term of stay in the reserve for enlisted personnel will increase from 50 to 55 years. It was decided to raise the bar in stages until 2028. That is, next year the authorities will be able to mobilize men under the age of 51, and in 2025 – up to 52 years. This promotion applies to privates, sergeants, and ensigns.
- Those who turn 27 by the end of 2023 can complete their enlistment until January 1 of the following year. This way, you can avoid being called up for military service. If you do not enroll in the reserve, then, with the entry into force of the amendments, a person can be called up for military service.
We have already shared detailed instructions from human rights activists on how those between 27 and 30 years old can enlist in the reserve this year and avoid being called up for military service in the future. Read the handout and share it with those who may need it.
