Journalists, political scientists and insiders agree in their forecasts: in 2024, Vladimir Putin will run for a fifth presidential term. Destroying democratic institutions and adopting several repressive laws every month, the Russian authorities for some reason still believe in elections as an important procedure for their legitimization. But why does Putin need elections, especially during a war? Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to cancel them, or at least reschedule them? With the help of political science, we explain why leaders who do not depend on the people need popular approval.
