While the U.S. is trying to tame TikTok, another Chinese social platform, WeChat, is penetrating social strata and tracking vast numbers of overseas Chinese.
In 2022, the social networking app WeChat had more than 1.3 billion monthly active users. This means that most Chinese families, relatives, friends and colleagues use this application.

WeChat covers almost every aspect of Chinese daily life online, from text messaging and video conferencing to making calls, paying bills, booking tickets, sharing photos and videos online, and spreading the news. However, the app is not a place for free speech or political debate.
