Since Chinese pressure has made it impossible for Taiwan to acquire submarines from overseas, Taiwan has launched its own program to build eight diesel-electric attack submarines (DSBs) from 2020.  Some components for diesel-electric submarines could not be produced in the country and had to be purchased abroad.  The torpedo tubes will be manufactured in Taiwan based on technologies transferred from abroad.  The submarine manufacturer, Taiwan’s China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC) in Kaohsiung, has reportedly set up a torpedo tube manufacturing unit at its shipyard, and tests have yielded positive results.  The launchers will be installed on submarines two through eight, which will be built at the shipyard.  The first submarine will be equipped with imported pipes.  Taiwan’s military leadership has denied reports that the submarine building program is being delayed due to global supply chain and transportation issues.
