If US Tech Companies support and defend Russian entities, and the US executes cyber attacks against those entities…?
Last night, the National Coordination Center of the Russian Federation for Computer Incidents (NCCC) warned of a possible increase in the number of attacks on Russian critical infrastructure facilities. And US President Joseph Biden during the last press conference, among other things, said that the United States is not afraid of cyber attacks from Russia and is ready for them. Earlier, information appeared in the American media that Joseph Biden was offered to conduct a massive cyber attack against Russia.
In the conditions of military campaigns, all countries that participate in them in one form or another risk suffering damage not only from direct military strikes, but also from attacks on infrastructure facilities. And the damage from cyber attacks can be no less than from direct hostilities.
Even before February 24, many foreign government agencies issued warnings to companies about possible cyber attacks. “Given the situation that is currently happening in the world, we anticipate the development of serious risks of hacker attacks against Japanese targets. All local companies and enterprises are required to increase the level of their information security systems, and the management of organizations should increase their own awareness of the threat of computer attacks. In if any Japanese company detects suspicious activity in its networks, it must promptly transfer all available information on the security incident to the relevant departments,” says, for example, in a statement by the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Japan, which is posted on its official website 22 February.
On the same day, an official statement from the US FBI was released. “Russia is a favorable operating environment for cybercriminals that is not going anywhere, because Russia’s confrontation with Western countries over Ukraine continues,” warned FBI information security chief David Ring. Similar statements were issued by specialized institutions in Australia, Britain, and Canada.
The Russian NKTsKI did not stand aside either, which last night warned of an increase in the number of attacks on Russian critical infrastructure facilities. “Attacks can be aimed at disrupting the functioning of important information resources and services, causing reputational damage, including for political purposes. In addition, in the future, it is possible to carry out malicious influences from the Russian information space to form a negative image of the Russian Federation in the eyes of the world community,” according to the message of the NCCKI.
The President of the United States during a press conference held yesterday, among other things, said that the United States is not afraid of cyber attacks from Russia and is ready for them.
Also, according to the NBC channel , Joseph Biden was offered to conduct a massive cyber attack against Russia, the purpose of which would be “to undermine Russia’s ability to support its military operations in Ukraine.” Among the proposed options – the disruption of the network infrastructure throughout Russia, power outages and interference with the work of railway turnouts.
But for now, the situation in Russia remains manageable. For example, the press service of PJSC Rostelecom commented on the situation as follows: “The infrastructure and communication networks of the company are operating normally, there has been no significant increase in Internet traffic. All digital services and services are available to the company’s customers in full.” The press service of JSC ER-Telecom Holding (TM Dom.ru) received the following comment: “There are no peak loads on our network at the moment. All services are available.”
The press service of Qrator Labs, which deals with protection against DDoS attacks, replied that there was no growth and intensity of attacks on customer resources. Company employees continue to monitor the situation.
However, at about 6 p.m., access to the websites of the President of Russia, the State Duma and the government was lost for a while. According to a number of Telegram channels, this was the result of a DDoS attack.
However, there were also services that coped with the loads with difficulty. In particular, there were failures in the work of the Telegram messenger. Its creator, Pavel Durov, attributed the situation to an increase in load that the infrastructure could not cope with: “Due to today’s events, the European Telegram cluster has faced an unprecedented load. As a result, some users may experience periodic short-term outages in a number of Telegram services. We understand that today people need reliable communication with their loved ones more than ever, and we are doing everything possible to maintain a high speed of sending and receiving messages,” he said in his Telegram account.
On February 23, the website of the head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, was subjected to a DDoS attack. “On February 23, a DDoS attack was launched on the website of the head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin. Let’s add that today YouTube and Instagram deleted the accounts of the head of the DPR,” a representative of the administration of the head of the DPR told RIA Novosti.
