Iran seizes UAE ship and captures its crew in Iranian waters
Iran seized a United Arab Emirates-registered ship violating its territorial waters this week, Iran’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.
“On Monday, an Emirati ship was seized by the border guards of Iran and its crew were detained due to illegal traffic in our country’s waters,” state TV quoted a ministry statement as saying.
“On the same day, UAE guards shot dead two Iranian fishermen and seized a boat… The UAE has expressed regret for the incident and in a letter on Wednesday announced its readiness to pay compensation.”
— “Iran has said it has seized a UAE-registered ship and arrested the crew for allegedly illegally entering its territorial waters in a move that risks escalating tensions in the oil-rich Gulf.
“Legal procedures to look into the case of this ship continue,” Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
No more details were given on the vessel, which was seized on Monday according the ministry. Iran said UAE coastguards had shot at Iranian civilian boats and killed two fishermen earlier that day, but it did not explicitly link the two incidents.
Tehran called on Abu Dhabi to release the boats and its nationals, and to hand over the bodies of those killed.’
