Polish authorities have officially confirmed that the massive fire that destroyed the Marywilska 44 shopping center in Warsaw on May 12, 2024, was an act of arson orchestrated by Russian intelligence services. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on May 11, 2025, that the fire was deliberately set under orders from a person located in Russia. Several suspects are already in custody, while others have been identified and are being actively pursued. The incident is part of broader sabotage activities attributed to Russia, which Polish officials describe as elements of a “hybrid war” targeting nations supporting Ukraine. These actions include not only arson but also cyberattacks.
The fire devastated approximately 1,400 shops and service points, significantly impacting Warsaw’s Vietnamese community. The year-long investigation involved extensive cooperation between Polish police, the Internal Security Agency, and international partners, including Lithuania. The effort included 121 days of site analysis, and statements from over 70 witnesses and 500 victims. Justice Minister Adam Bodnar and Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak emphasized their commitment to ensuring all culprits are held accountable.
This revelation contributes to growing European concerns about covert destabilization efforts attributed to Russia, although Moscow has consistently denied such accusations.
