In early February 2025, the Colombian Navy intercepted a semi-submersible vessel off the Pacific coast, seizing over 5,000 pounds (approximately 2,276 kilograms) of cocaine. The operation led to the arrest of two Colombian nationals and one Ecuadorian. Authorities estimate the street value of the confiscated cocaine at around $76 million.
The seizure marks Colombia’s first interception of a “narco-sub” in 2025. In 2023, the Colombian Navy intercepted 20 semi-submersibles, resulting in the seizure of 30 tons of cocaine and over 5 tons of marijuana.

Narco-submarines, often semi-submersible vessels, are engineered to transport large quantities of narcotics while evading detection. Their low profiles make them challenging to spot visually and on radar. These vessels are typically constructed in remote areas of Colombia’s Pacific coast, utilizing lightweight materials like fiberglass to minimize radar reflection. They are often painted in blue or gray hues to blend with the ocean, further reducing visibility.
The intercepted vessel measured approximately 15 meters in length and was equipped with twin outboard motors, a common configuration that offers both speed and maneuverability. Inside, authorities discovered 111 bundles containing the cocaine, each package stamped with unique identifiers, such as images of scorpions and Mexican flags, indicating the involvement of specific trafficking organizations.
The use of semi-submersible vessels by drug traffickers has been a growing concern for international law enforcement agencies. These vessels can travel long distances, with some capable of reaching Central America and even the United States. Their design allows them to carry multi-ton loads of narcotics while remaining mostly submerged, making detection difficult.
The Colombian Navy’s recent success underscores the ongoing challenges in combating sophisticated drug trafficking methods. Continuous advancements in detection technology and international cooperation remain crucial in addressing this evolving threat.
