On June 2, 2023, the US Treasury Department sanctioned Iranian technology company Arvan Cloud for its role in internet censorship. Arvan Cloud is accused of helping to develop the national information network, which separates Iranians from the global Internet. These sanctions prohibit transactions by US persons with Arvan Cloud and its affiliates.
I have received reports from Iran that despite the US sanctions, Iranian users who access YouTube through VPN and proxy are apparently seeing advertisements from Arvan Cloud through Google Ads. It is noteworthy that while the main domain of Arvan Cloud com. is, these advertisements are indicative of the domain co. they use This could be an attempt to circumvent detection and continue advertising despite sanctions.
This is not the first time that concerns have been raised about the possible misuse of American technology platforms by Iranian institutions. Now, we see that apparently sanctioned entities are advertising using American services by circumventing American restrictions. It is unclear what measures Google and the US Treasury have taken to prevent such circumventions and protect the integrity of the platform, even though the Islamic Republic is trying to attack US national security every day.
