How the Russian Federation is creating a base of the Black Sea Fleet in Ochamchir: and is it really almost ready, or was it “slightly” overestimated in Georgia (video)

Georgian mass media reported that the new base of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation in occupied Abkhazia is almost completed, but this is not entirely true.

Back in October 2023, the Russian Federation announced plans to modernize the naval base in occupied Abkhazia in Ochamchir . And the work on this object is allegedly carried out in a forced mode.

At least, this is reported by the Georgian TV channel TV Pirveli, which also published a video from this port, noting that work is ongoing, in particular, new facilities have already been built to accommodate personnel. According to the plan, the naval base should be commissioned this year.

And the video from the Russian military base, because a unit of the border coast guard is permanently stationed there, needs to be further analyzed. In particular, it is possible to compare drone footage with public satellite images dated October 2022.
It should be noted right away that the video from the drone is mirrored for some reason, so they had to bring it into real view. But in any case, no new buildings are visible on the base.
Regarding the place where the works are visible, we should note that this is not a construction site, but a cargo coal terminal, which, according to available information, is actively used as a smuggling hub under the control of the FSB.

But it really shows that compared to 2022, one building was completed, but work on it began in the summer of 2021.
objectively small base with a bay measuring 200 by 200 meters. We can also show the scale of the works that the Russian Federation carried out to modernize the base in Caspiansk in 2015 and 2023, where the Caspian flotilla is gradually being re-based.

But we should note that the very initiative of the Russian Federation to place even part of the ships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation in the occupied Ochamchira demonstrates that for the Kremlin, 130 km to NATO, namely the distance from this base to the border with Turkey, is safer than being based in the still occupied Sevastopol.
