An unknown hacker decided to sell 23 TB of stolen data from 1 billion Chinese citizens for 10 BTC

On one of the forums, a user under the nickname “ChinaDan” announced the sale of the data of 1 billion Chinese citizens for 10 gold bitcoins. The data is said to have been leaked from Shanghai National Police (SHGA), totaling 23TB, according to Reuters.

 The database contains the following information:

1️⃣ Name
2️⃣ Address
3️⃣ Date of birth
4️⃣ National ID
5️⃣ Mobile number
6️⃣ All crimes / Case details

樂 ChinaDan shared a sample from 750k records as a proof of his words.

According to Kendra Schaefer, head of research at Beijing-based consulting firm Trivium China, the leak will be one of the largest in history. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao indirectly confirmed the leak:

“Our Threat intelligence found 1 billion residential records for sale on the dark web, including the name, address, national ID, mobile phone, police and medical records of one of the Asian countries. Probably due to an error in the deployment of Elastic Search.”
