The global shipbuilding industry has taken over Asia in recent years, accounting for 93% of all world shipbuilding in China, South Korea and Japan. Also, about 52% of the tonnage of the world’s merchant ships belongs to Asian companies.
European shipowners account for 41% of world ship tonnage and North American shipowners account for 6% of commercial tonnage. Companies from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Oceania have a small share of about one percent
