Tesla’s Cybertruck is not bulletproof. While Tesla has marketed the vehicle as having “armor glass” and a stainless steel exoskeleton designed to be highly durable, real-world tests and demonstrations have shown that the protection has limits.
Stainless Steel Body Panels
Tesla claims the Cybertruck’s body is made from ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel, which can resist dents and minor impacts. However, tests show that while it can withstand certain types of damage, it is not impervious to normal bullets (anything above a 22).
Glass Failure in Demonstration
During Tesla’s initial reveal, the so-called “armor glass” shattered when hit by a steel ball. Other tests indicated that the glass can withstand smaller impacts but is not bulletproof against firearms. In fact, all car windows are typically made of tempered glass or laminated glass, both designed to handle minor impacts without shattering immediately.
Ballistic Tests
Independent testers have fired bullets at Cybertruck prototypes. While the stainless steel body may stop small-caliber rounds like a .22LR, it does not reliably stop any other bullets such as those from rifles or handguns above .22LR.
