Jihad or ghazavat?

Jihad can be big or small.

Great jihad, also known as jihad of the heart, is a fight against oneself, one’s own vices.

Small jihad or jihad of the hand is an armed struggle. During military jihad, Islam prohibits killing people serving the military, women, the elderly, children, civilians, and clerics.

“jihad of the sword” (jihad al-sayf), religiously sanctioned armed violence carried out in defense of Islam, Muslim territory, or Muslim lives—all of which are seen to be beneficial attributes.

Only the highest cleric or theologian can declare jihad after the highest spiritual meeting – a fatwa is issued, which describes the reasons for jihad and makes a decision. Only the highest spiritual assembly can cancel jihad.

Ghazavat are military campaigns “for Islam in general.” Ghazawat is considered jihad of the sword.

“A battle or raid against non-Muslims for the expansion of Muslim territory and/or conversion of non-Muslims to Islam.”

The rules of Jihad
The opponent must always have started the fighting.
It must not be fought to gain territory.
It must be launched by a religious leader.
It must be fought to bring about good – something that Allah will approve of.
Every other way of solving the problem must be tried before resorting to war.

Not only a spiritual, but also a secular leader can declare ghazavat.
